your letters I AM directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknowledge the receipt of of the 7th, 18th, and 28th ultimo in regard to the additional taxation on opium imposed by the Chinese authorities in Kuantung.
In reply, I am to inform you that the Chinese Government have delegated an official to discuss the whole question with His Majesty's chargé d'affaires at Peking, to whom full instructions are being sent.
Sir E. Grey hopes that these discussions may lead to a satisfactory settlement of
the matter.
